Essential Checklist for Studying in the UK: Law, Medicine, Arts and Humanities, and Finance

Research and University Selection

  • Shortlist universities based on rankings, course structures, and budget (Oxford, Cambridge, LSE, UCL, etc.).
  • Check the admission requirements for your program.
  • Compare tuition fees, scholarships, and living expenses.
  • Research career opportunities and post-study work options.  

 Entrance Exams and Academic Preparation  

  • Law: Take the LNAT (Law National Aptitude Test) if required  
  • Medicine: Take the UCAT or BMAT for medical school entry  
  • Finance & Business: GMAT or GRE may be required for some programs  
  • Arts & Humanities: Portfolio or written work submission may be needed  
  • Take the IELTS or TOEFL if English proficiency is required  

 Application Process (UCAS and Direct Applications)  

  • Apply through UCAS for undergraduate programs (Law, Medicine, Arts & Humanities)  
  • For postgraduate courses, apply directly through the university website  
  • Prepare a strong Personal Statement  
  • Submit Letters of Recommendation (LORs) if required  
  • Upload academic transcripts and certificates  
  • Pay application fees and submit applications before deadlines  

Financial Planning  

  • Verify tuition fees and living expenses for your university city  
  • Apply for scholarships, grants, and bursaries  
  • Arrange proof of funds for visa purposes (such as bank statements and sponsorship letters)  
  • Consider taking out a student loan if needed  

UK Student Route Visa (Tier 4)  

  • Receive your CAS (Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies) from the university.  
  • Pay the visa application fee and the Immigration Health Surcharge (IHS).
  • Complete the UK Student Visa (Tier 4) application.  
  • Schedule and attend a biometric appointment at a visa center.
  • Gather the required documents (passport, CAS, proof of funds, English test scores).
  • Wait for visa approval and collect your BRP (Biometric Residence Permit) upon arrival.  

 Travel and Accommodation  

  • Book your flight tickets in advance  
  • Arrange for on-campus or off-campus accommodation  
  • Pack all necessary documents (passport, visa, CAS, financial proof, admission letter)  
  • Carry some GBP (£) cash for initial expenses  

 Health and Insurance  

  • Register with the NHS (National Health Service) upon arrival.
  • Complete any required vaccinations before you travel.
  • Bring prescriptions and necessary medications with you.

 Pre-Departure Essentials  

  • Join student groups and university forums.  
  • Learn about UK culture, laws, and academic expectations.  
  • Open a UK bank account after you arrive.  
  • Get a UK SIM card for communication.
